In his quest for the perfect combination of botanicals to make his gin, Sloane’s master distiller and blender was struck by the scale and completeness of Sir Hans Sloane’s (1660-1753) personal botanical collection. This collection was amassed during his lifetime and formed the foundation of the British and Natural History Museum collections.
Sir Hans Sloane was a Royal Physician, botanist, collector, and lifelong benefactor and landlord of the Physic Garden Chelsea – one of the UK’s foremost institutions for over 300 years for growing and experimenting in the use of plants and plant extracts for medicinal purposes, the first uses for juniper distillates – the forerunner of modern gin.
Undoubtedly of significant influence and inspiration to the early English gin distillers of the mid-18th century, Sir Hans Sloane’s botanical collection introduced to the UK the exotic botanicals juniper berries, fresh oranges & fresh lemons, orris root, angelica, cardamom, coriander, cassia bark, liquorice & vanilla which have formed the basis for flavoring gins ever since.
Sloane's master distiller & blender thought it only fitting to call his gin 'Sloane’s Gin' in Honour of Sir Hans Sloane for his significant contribution to botany and, unwittingly Gin.
The main difference between Sloane’s Gin and other gins is that it’s hand crafted in small batches using a unique process that involves using fresh citrus fruits and individually distilling the botanicals. Unashamedly inspired by the great gins of the past, Sloane’s was created with a brief to be simply the finest gin available. Hand-crafted using individually distilled botanicals and fresh citrus fruits – a process that’s unique to us – Sloane’s achieved its goal by winning ‘World’s Best Gin’ at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirit Competition 2011!
Peppery at first on the nose, then spicy fennel and juniper berries come through. Sweet citrus peels and vanilla ice cream from the whole vanilla beans in the botanical selection. Herbal at times. The strong juniper centre holds Sloane's together. The finish doesn't last long, but the floral, woody notes are lovely while they last.
