In the 60’s, Erica and Peter Max Suter, a Swiss couple, bought the abandoned farm and turned it into a rural estate with woods and pastures, breeding sheep and pigeons as well as planting a vineyard; soon the Meleta winery (in Italian, 'Meleto' is an apple orchard and the winery was named after the orchard on its land) was known for its wine and products. It was at that time that Cabernet Franc and Merlot were introduced to Roccatederighi.
Originating from the Near East, the grape varieties that have been brought together in Ampeleia are often found in Mediterranean farmlands and contribute to assert their varied identity, rich in subtleties. In past times, vineyards were not planted with just one grape variety but many types of grapes were present and they were all harvested at the same time.
Their experience and the observation of the land over the years have brought a better understanding of each vineyard's potential expression, leading them to produce wines sourced from a single plot.
With this wine, they are embarking on a new journey for Ampeleia: the 'Monovarietali' project that will include varietal wines representing the fruit of deeper knowledge and of the evolution of ideas.
The grapes are sourced in plot n° 148 of cadastral sheet 153 called "Vigna della Pieve", with sandy soils rich in pebbles, where Alicante Nero vines grow – a common Mediterranean variety also known as Grenache in France, Cannonau in the neighbouring island of Sardinia and as Garnacha in Spain.
Fruit was harvested the first week of September at yields of 50 hl/ha. Vinification is part carbonic and part destemmed. Aged 6 months in cement tanks.
A bold, pungent red from Ampeleia. Olives, dried cherries, savoury herbs and liquorice are front and centre of the nose and palate.
