Domaine Vessigaud is a small property, established in the 18th century and encompassing some of the very finest vineyard plots in Pouilly-Fuissé. The current winemaker, Pierre Vessigaud, is the latest of a long line of winemakers in the family, each passing down tradtional winemaking methods to the successive generations.
Pierre Vessigaud works to a simple philosophy: there cannot be great wine without great terroir. First and foremost, he concentrates on producing the very finest grapes for his wine to great effect.
The chardonnay grapes of the Vielles Vignes Pouilly-Fuissé are grown on older vines, between 40 and 80 years old. The wines are a blend of grapes from different parcels of vines growing in a blend of calcarous, stoney and clay soils leading to wines of great aromatic quality and a touch of minerality.
All grapes are harvested by hand and pneumatically pressed as whole bunches. Wocal yeasts are used in the fermentation, which lasted 60 days, to ensure the distinct terroir of the grapes shine through. Fermentation was done in a combination of stainless steel tanks, casks and large oak barrels. The wine ages for 12 months in 5 year old French oak barrels.
The nose is a blend of rich citrus fruits, most noticeably lemon, but with underlying raisin, honey and lovely butterscotch. The palate is equally satisfying, with the powerful citrus fruits balanced well with richer touches of honey, tropical fruits and slight minerality. The acidity is pronouced and balances the fruit well, giving a long, refreshing finish.
