Details

Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, most quality winemakers in California paid little attention to the state’s Central Coast, preferring to focus their efforts instead on warmer and more fashionable spots. Not Jerry Lohr. Armed with an instinctive feel for climate, soil and location forged in his upbringing on a South Dakota farm, Jerry turned away from the crowd, and towards Monterey.

Since planting those first vines in Arroyo Seco more than 40 years ago, J. Lohr has become a flag-bearer for some of the most dynamic emerging Californian wine regions: wind-whipped Monterey for cool-climate Chardonnay, and, in the mid-1980s, the warmer inland area of Paso Robles for richer reds, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

In 2015, J. Lohr is now one of the few California wineries of its size to benefit from an estate, vineyard-first approach and the care and attention of constant family ownership, with a second generation carrying on Jerry’s passion for environmental and commercial sustainability.

Vineyards
The Valdiguié is grown on Chualar loam soil in the Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey County. Originally thought to be the Gamay Noir grape of France’s Beaujolais winegrowing region, U.C. Davis has since identified this grape to be Valdiguié from an area in the southwest of France. Regardless of its origin and identity, Valdiguié grown in the windy, cold Arroyo Seco produces a wine reminiscent of the “Crus” of Beaujolais – Morgon, Fleurie and Moulin-à-Vent.

Vinification
Stainless steel, 72% traditional red wine fermentation to 85°F and 28% light press from carbonic maceration (whole cluster fermented). Traditional fermentation portion was 5 days on skins while the carbonic maceration was 14 days to pressing. Aged 4 months in stainless steel tanks.

Tasting Notes
a deeply pigmented red-purple colour with profuse cranberry, cherry and black pepper aromas. The juicy palate is coated with pomegranate and raspberry fruit, leaving a sweet and mildly astringent finish. Serve chilled.
