Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, most quality winemakers in California paid little attention to the state’s Central Coast, preferring to focus their efforts instead on warmer and more fashionable spots. Not Jerry Lohr. Armed with an instinctive feel for climate, soil and location forged in his upbringing on a South Dakota farm, Jerry turned away from the crowd, and towards Monterey.
Since planting those first vines in Arroyo Seco more than 40 years ago, J. Lohr has become a flag-bearer for some of the most dynamic emerging Californian wine regions: wind-whipped Monterey for cool-climate Chardonnay, and, in the mid-1980s, the warmer inland area of Paso Robles for richer reds, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
In 2015, J. Lohr is now one of the few California wineries of its size to benefit from an estate, vineyard-first approach and the care and attention of constant family ownership, with a second generation carrying on Jerry’s passion for environmental and commercial sustainability.
Falcon’s Perch Pinot Noir is produced from cool climate grapes grown in select vineyards within and surrounding the Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands regions of central Monterey County. This region has earned a well-deserved reputation for producing world-class Pinot Noir. Over the past decade, the introduction of Dijon clones of Pinot, along with the old standby Pommard clone, has dramatically increased the quality of the varietal here. These newer clones are the backbone of this release of Falcon’s Perch, named for the bird which had made its home in the lone pine tree among the vines, safeguarding the grapes from vertabrate pests while preserving the ecosystem’s natural balance.
Fermented as 12-ton lots in open-top punch down tanks, 5 to 10 days with light pump overs and daily punch downs. Temperatures peaking at 92°F rendered a high, complex colour in the wine. Matured in stainless steel with a small fraction aged in French oak barrels.
Aromas of cherry preserves, fresh strawberries violet and crème brulée lead to a rich, soft palate with fine grained tannins and plenty of fruit. Acidity is clean and fresh
