In the heart of rural Sussex, one of Britain’s most beautiful southern counties, lies Bolney Wine Estate, a vineyard which carries on a tradition brought to Britain by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago.
Located in the village, Bolney Wine Estate, the vision of Janet and Rodney Pratt, is situated on a hill which was part of the Butting Hill One Hundred, listed in the Domesday Book. Village tradition has it that the Prince Regent was a frequent visitor to Bolney when travelling to Brighton, staying at Bolney Lodge of which Bolney Wine Estate formed a part in the 19th Century.
It all started back in 1972 as Bookers Vineyard, with 3 acres of vines. From then there have been international and national awards along the way and a few different winemakers too! The new era started in the 1990s when Samantha Linter took charge of the winemaking. Since her arrival there have been many more awards and the vineyard plantings have expanded to the now 22 acres. In 2005 a brand new, state of the art winery was completed, with help in the form of a grant from DEFRA.
Bolney Wine Estate is located on the edge of the South Downs, about 14 miles from the UK’s south coast, and comprises five unique vineyard sites at around 36m (118ft) above sea level. The vines here are between two and twelve years old and are planted at a density of 2,470 vines/ha. The vines are trained using both Vertical Shoot Positioning (Foxhole Vineyards) and the Sylvos trellis system (18 Acre Field), both of which help to maximise airflow and sunlight penetration to the vines. Extensive canopy management is carried out throughout the season to ensure the ideal microclimate that leads to high-quality fruit. The soil type found at Bolney Wine Estate comprises predominantly Upper Tunbridge Wells Sand, consisting of sandy-loam, siltstone and clay over sandstone bedrock. This soil type allows good heat retention and excellent drainage.
This stylish, 100% Chardonnay vintage sparkler is made in the traditional method with 2 and a half years’ lees ageing for added depth of flavour. Smooth and full-bodied, this wine has delicious yeasty undertones complemented by fresh citrus notes.
